From woodlands to pastures the undulating driveway leads to Scotney Gardens.
It is not seldom to come across the Pheasant, busy picking at the grass a little further on. If he is on the edge of the alley,
the singular bird, soon worried, goes into hidding at a brisk, elongated, almost aerial pace. He has just reached a small Bramble and Heather shrub.
The damp meadow, along the Sweet Bourne river, welcomes him as well, along the Alders, between the Carex touch.
Among my childhood birds, that I think of – while sitting on the second-hand bookshop bench -, there are the Sparrows in a joyful gathering, the Goldcrest slenderness and delicacy, the Tawny owl attractive songs, and the Pheasant amazing colours.

Entre boisements et pâtures, l’allée vallonnée conduit aux jardins de Scotney.
Il n’est pas rare d’y croiser le Faisan, affairé plus loin à picorer dans les herbes. S’il est au bord de l’allée, l’oiseau, singulier, vite préoccupé, part se cacher d’un pas rapide, effilé, presque aérien. Il vient de gagner un petit massif de Ronces et de Bruyères.
Les prairies humides le long de la rivière Sweet Bourne l’accueillent également, le long des Aulnes, entre les touches de Carex.
Des oiseaux de l’enfance auxquels je songe – assis sur le banc de la second- hand bookshop – il y a les Moineaux en assemblée joyeuse, les finesses du Roitelet, les chants attirants de la Chouette hulotte, et les couleurs surprenantes du Faisan.
